The VBL is a pension scheme for public sector employees funded by the federal and state governments. It provides benefits under the company pension scheme. Employees in the public sector are compulsorily insured in the VBL on the basis of the collective agreement on occupational and supplementary pension schemes for public sector employees (ATV). The VBL also offers voluntary insurance options. Employees in the academic field have the option of being exempted from compulsory insurance.

Paderborn University cannot provide counselling. Counselling is exclusively provided directly by the VBL.
